When was the last time you hugged you?
My intention in this letter today was to write about the shift into back-to-school season and share some cool resources with you… but something different happened.
Over the past two weeks, I’ve felt my energy depleting (I know—already, and it’s not even September 1st!). Somewhere between 5am wake-ups, packing lunches, refereeing meltdowns, and navigating solo parenting while my husband travels, I forgot to hug myself.
Both figuratively and literally, I forgot to care for myself. I forgot to give myself attention, and I forgot to let the people I love know that mom needs caring for too.
So this weekend, I’m unapologetically asking my family to hold me while I rest and recover from a sore throat. It feels like a pivot from what I grew up believing—that slowing down, asking for help, and showing vulnerability is weakness. But instead, in these softer moments, resentment and anger are giving way to love and warmth.
There’s a time and place for everyone in the family to be cared for—even mom.
A 5-Step Self-Hug Visualization
Find your quiet spot
Sit or stand somewhere alone, where you feel safe and undisturbed. Close your eyes and let your breath settle.Wrap your arms around yourself
Cross your arms over your chest and pull yourself into a full embrace—like you would a dear friend. Hold firmly, but gently.Breathe into the hug
Inhale deeply, feeling your chest expand into your arms. Exhale slowly, softening into your own embrace. Let your body know it is cared for.Visualize the glow
Imagine a warm golden light radiating from your heart, wrapping around your entire being. Feel it fill you with love, safety, and presence.Whisper your words
Say whatever your heart needs to hear—softly, inside or aloud. It could be: “I’m safe. I’m loved. I’m enough.” Or simply the gentle reminder: “I’m here.”
Where You May Have Seen Us Recently
I’m now a contributing writer for Her View From Home, sharing from time to time my experiential learnings within motherhood <3.
If you’ve ever wondered how travel can shape the way we mother and the values we pass to our children, this story is for you. A year ago, I took my three-year-old daughter, Mahira, to Morocco for my sister’s wedding—and that journey taught me how to wander slowly, intentionally, and with wide-eyed presence.
“But it wasn’t until I became a mother that I began to see travel through an entirely different lens.”
